Meredith Believing in Kids Saves Lives--A Passionate Keynote Address by Charlie Applestein

The author of No Such Thing as a Bad Kid asked a room filled with more than 200 mentors from across New England Friday, if, in all their experience, they met a troubled child who could say they had an adult who believed in them. Not a single hand went up. “When you really believe in a kid you put fuel in the tank,” Charlie Applestein, MSW, said at the first Northeast Regional Mentoring conference held at the Marriott Hotel in Providence. The fuel Applestein was talking about is “hope.” Bringin… Continue

We just had our first all girl pairs retreat last Saturday. The intention of the retreat was to deepen the mentoring relationship between the girls and their mentors in the hopes that the pairs will continue beyond middle school crazies and also to foster leadership development for the mentees. Planning started more than a year ago, with one of my mentors who works in leadership development collaborating with me (we wer… Continue

Andrea Torello To all those who care about mentoring in Vermont...

Greetings All, Below is a message from Amy Cunningham, Executive Director of Everybody Wins! Vermont. Amy and a small group of folks are starting a conversation about a Vermont Mentoring Conference in 2010. Here is Amy's email. You can respond directly to Amy or to this blog. Some energy has gathered around the idea of creating a Vermont mentoring meeting/conference in 2010. This is just a seed of an idea and we could use plenty of input to help it germinate. If you are interest… Continue

VMP Webmaster A Big Buddy Shares Mentor Experience

"I became a Big Buddy my first year at UVM to an 8-year-old boy named Jay who lived in the north end of Burlington. He came from a very poor family who had never been to college, and his self-confidence was really low because he had never been told that he was good at anything. I got together with him every single week for 3 hours, for my entire 4 years of school. We spent our time playing games, hiking, doing art projects, or going to an occasional special place like a museum or to the movieContinue

Meredith Mentor to Mentor: Spread the Word

Ninety-six percent of current mentors say they would recommend mentoring to a friend, family member, or co-worker. If each mentor in Chittenden County were to find one single friend, family member or co-worker to sign up to become a mentor, we could have over 1,600 of our community's children matched with a caring adult. We urge you to make this leap, to find one, just one, compassionate adult to mentor. Let's work together to close the mentoring gap in Chittenden County. While Mobius has been… Continue

Andrea Torello Collaborating & Cooperating to Help Kids Succeed:Sustaining the Mentoring Movement in Difficult Economic Times

Nelson Mandela said "There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children." I believe that. I also believe that individually and collectively, the greatest potential we have for impacting the future is the influence we have on young people now. Everyone understands that these are difficult economic times. It’s the headlines of every newspaper; it’s the lead story on television and radio every night. It’s our own personal experience. But what does it… Continue

Wendy Farber Mentoring Arts Day Retreat

Our program just had a very successful 1/2 day Arts Retreat. We had a 9:00 start time at a local church with muffins and juice. Then we divided up into workshops (2 choices). One group was healthy cooking. They made our lunch of vegetable soup, a roll and fruit salad, set up and cleaned up. We had a great opening activity, led by one of our mentors around risk taking and the circle of life!!The other group learned belly dancing. Both workshops were free and led by mentors in our program. The ch… Continue
