Vermont Mentoring Partnerships

A network for the mentoring community in Vermont

Andrea Torello

To all those who care about mentoring in Vermont...

Greetings All,

Below is a message from Amy Cunningham, Executive Director of Everybody Wins! Vermont. Amy and a small group of folks are starting a conversation about a Vermont Mentoring Conference in 2010. Here is Amy's email. You can respond directly to Amy or to this blog.

Some energy has gathered around the idea of creating a Vermont mentoring meeting/conference in 2010. This is just a seed of an idea and we could use plenty of input to help it germinate.

If you are interested in being a part of the planning to make this day happen, please consider joining our steering committee. We’ll hold a conference call during the week of September 28 to create a framework and assign some tasks so that we can then submit a proposal for funding. Contact Amy Cunningham at amy@ewvt.org or 229-2665 if you’d like to join the committee.

Nothing is confirmed yet- there is still plenty of time for your input- but here are some things that have been brought up thus far:

o Dr. Mentor, Susan Weinberger, will be in Vermont on May 13 & 14—try to “piggyback” on that visit and have her serve as our keynote.
o Devote much of the day to idea sharing /breakout sessions that would meet the needs of the wide variety of folks with different interests/needs, with a strong focus on tapping into the collective wisdom of the group.
o Use Open Source Technology to have the group define/own the agenda for that day.
Some ideas for sharing/ topics:
o Male recruitment and retention
o School-based mentoring
o Keeping matches safe
o Business outreach toolkit
o VT networking for effectiveness and efficiency
o Discussion about statewide priorities/capacity for mentoring
o Sustaining program in these economic times
o Maintaining matches through the summer

We hope to create an energizing event to help improve and expand mentoring efforts in Vermont. If you can’t help plan, that’s OK too, we’ll look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Another great idea Merrick. Perhaps this can be paired with a general session on background checks, including a review of the PF established standards on background checks? There is lots of experience in the state with long standing program coordinators like Kristen and Gabe.

Should "liability and Risk" be a part of the program? As a new program I don't know if this is an issue.

I would like more information about mentoring kids with an incarcerated parent. Please add that to your list.
